“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” ― Bill Bryson

The Beginnings Of a Travel Writer

I bought this book on travel writing a little while ago and I read it from cover to cover. It's written as a real, honest and helpful guide to assist amateur writers with a passion for travel, who want to acquire the skills for writing about their adventures in a way that engages their readers, whether that be as a profession or just for fun. It had insider info about getting a career started, samples of good travel writing and also a realistic overview of the difficulties and instability of a career in travel writing. Despite all the negative impressions I've been left with, I think I'd still love to give it a go, because reading a good piece of travel writing and letting it transport you to another place and feeling the travel bug inside you squirm to get out again, well, it's an incredible feeling and a wonderful skill to behold. If I could make that impact on even one reader I think I'd glow with pride. So I'll be using some of the helpful hints in the book to get me started in my travel writing endeavour. I hope it goes well, and hopefully, actually writing some pieces and seeing it come together will be encouragement enough for me to keep at it!
